I'm in yer comment section, trollin' yer thoughts

Daniel Libit @ Politico wrote a humdinger this week about the kinds of nuts one finds on a comment board:

Behold the Commentocracy, where big ideas and rough remarks sit shoulder to shoulder, altogether transforming the nature of the Web and of journalism….

Across the Web, political sites (along with those dedicated to other mainstream distractions like music, culture and sports) are accumulating such a mass of reader responses that it is changing the very nature of the online exchange. Unique commenting communities, cultures and hierarchies have formed at various sites, distinguished from one another by the province’s ideology, protocol and professionalism.

Web sites ranging from the smallest of blogs straight through to The New York Times are struggling to discourage spammers and bomb-throwers without tamping down the larger, productive give-and-take.

Most of the stuff I’ve heard at reason has been pretty tame, although there was this guy:

“Mike Riggs has to be the worst columnist this fucking magazine has ever hired. Where has McCain ever said crashing (I love the choice of words, as if it was pilot error instead of enemy bullets that brought him down)was a qualification. I think most Americans see it as a benefit because he volunteered to fly combat missions in a time of war, a sacrifice most Americans would not make. He refused to leave the Hanoi Hilton when given a chance by his captors. Instead he endured five years of gruelling torture. I see such resilience and strength of character as admirable. Foolishly mocking it with stupid jokes about Elvis impersonators is the realm of the tinfoil-hat left, and it is fucking pathetic that Mike “douchebag” Riggs repeats it on this site. Evidently selflessly serving your country during a time of war and receiving life-long injuries because of it is now a liability in the eyes of these assholes.

And by the way, I challenge you Mike, you ignorant fucking nitwit, to find one prominent conservative commentator who referred to Wesley Clark as a traitor. It quite simply did not happen.”

But I knew in the back of my mind that no comment compared to the invective readers spewed at TFS blogger Ryan Napier in the wake of his “Don’t support our troops” editorial, run in last year’s Reporter. That is, until I came into work this morning and saw that someone had posted 11 comments to Ryan’s article, in the span of an hour and using several different handles. (I am, though should not be, still the administrator of The Reporter’s website.) I blocked the comments for further moderation, but thought it pertinent to place a sampling of them here–and remember, these are all from the same commenter, Dan Elliot at refineddirt@yahoo.com (here’s his Myspace page):

OUR GOVERNMENT HAS AMASSED AN INVASION FORCE AGAINST THE SOVREIGN ISLAMIC NATIONS AS THEIR ANGLO ANCESTORS DID THROUGH THEIR SELF RIGHTIOUS CRUSADES. IT IS IMPERITIVE THAT ALL AMERICANS STATIONED IN BOTH IRAQ AND AFGANISTAN BE BEATEN AND DRAGGED THROUGH THEIR WAKE OF MURDER AND DESTRUCTION, TO BE TRIED BY THE FAMILYS OF THEIR VICTIMS AND HUNG IN DISHONOR

You are a murderous fool. You speak of atrocities as if they solved anything. The man who made your precious bomb spoke German. Unfair advatage is your weapon of choice and may you someday meet the fate of those who’s familys and livelyhoods are now warped and shattered. You are truly the voice of the scum of this earth. I spit at you in digust.

I assume your tag means you hate homosexuals. What of the ones that “serve” your cause of genocide. Do they not deserve your pitiful recognition.

You are the infidel. You are the murderer. May you someday be at the mercy of your enemy. For what you’ve done or wish to do, you deserve none.

REVISION- My previous statement is my own declaration, and not that of anyone who might agree with some of my responses. Also, I would like to apologize for any poor grammar or misspelling made in those responses as they might deter the reader of the truth therein.

His comments are waiting moderation, and may end up as part of a subpoena should Dan Elliot ever blow up a federal building or attempt to silence a journalist. It’s fascinating, isn’t it, what people have the courage to post in a public forum?
